Best Time to Visit Nepal: A Month-by-Month Guide

Choosing when to visit Nepal can make or break your trip. This comprehensive month-by-month guide covers weather, festivals, and ideal activities for every season so you can plan the perfect Nepal journey.

Best Time to Visit Nepal: A Month-by-Month Guide

Nepal's climate varies dramatically by region and altitude. The Himalayan highlands, mid-hill valleys, and southern Terai plains each have their own microclimate. Understanding when to visit is key to enjoying the best weather, clearest mountain views, and most vibrant festivals.

Spring: March – May (Peak Season)

Spring is one of the two best times to visit Nepal. The pre-monsoon season brings warm temperatures, blooming rhododendrons (Nepal's national flower), and stable trekking conditions. This is the prime season for Everest and Annapurna expeditions. Expect some afternoon clouds and occasional rain at lower elevations by May.

  • Trekking: Excellent on all routes
  • Wildlife: Good — animals are active and vegetation is lower
  • Festivals: Holi (February/March), Chaitra Dashain, Buddha Jayanti (May)
  • Temperature Kathmandu: 15–28°C

Summer/Monsoon: June – August (Low Season)

The monsoon brings heavy rainfall, leeches on trails, and reduced visibility. Most trekking regions are wet and slippery. However, the Mustang and Dolpo regions lie in a rain shadow and remain dry — making this their best season. The Terai (Chitwan, Bardia) is hot and humid but wildlife is abundant near waterholes.

  • Trekking: Not recommended except Upper Mustang and Dolpo
  • Festivals: Rato Machindranath Chariot Festival, Janai Purnima, Gai Jatra
  • Temperature Kathmandu: 20–30°C with heavy rain

Autumn: September – November (Peak Season)

Widely considered the best time to visit Nepal, post-monsoon autumn offers crystal-clear skies, freshly washed mountain views, and ideal trekking temperatures. The trails are busy but well-supplied, and the major festivals of Dashain and Tihar fill the country with celebrations, lights, and family gatherings.

  • Trekking: Best conditions — clear skies, stable weather
  • Wildlife: Excellent at Chitwan and Bardia
  • Festivals: Dashain (October), Tihar/Deepawali (October/November), Chhath
  • Temperature Kathmandu: 12–25°C

Winter: December – February (Off Season)

Winter brings cold temperatures and snow at high altitude, closing many high passes. However, lower-altitude treks like the Annapurna foothills, Chitwan jungle safaris, and Kathmandu Valley sightseeing are pleasant. Prices drop significantly and crowds thin out.

  • Trekking: Lower altitude routes only (Poon Hill, Chitwan, Kathmandu)
  • Festivals: Maghe Sankranti (January), Maha Shivaratri (February/March)
  • Temperature Kathmandu: 2–15°C, frost at night

Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors combining trekking, wildlife, and cultural sightseeing, we recommend October–November as the single best month to visit Nepal. The skies are at their clearest, every activity is available, and the Dashain and Tihar festivals add an unforgettable cultural dimension to your trip.
