Everest Base Camp Trek: Everything You Need to Know

Planning the Everest Base Camp Trek? This complete guide covers permits, fitness requirements, packing lists, costs, accommodation, and everything else you need to prepare for the world's most famous trek.

Everest Base Camp Trek: Everything You Need to Know

The Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek is on nearly every adventure traveler's bucket list. Standing at 5,364 meters in the shadow of the world's highest mountain is an experience unlike any other. But proper preparation is essential. Here's everything you need to know before you go.

Trek Overview

  • Distance: Approximately 130 km (round trip)
  • Duration: 12–14 days (including acclimatization)
  • Maximum Altitude: 5,545m at Kala Patthar (viewpoint)
  • Difficulty: Challenging (no technical climbing required)
  • Best Season: March–May and September–November
  • Starting Point: Lukla (2,860m) — accessed by flight from Kathmandu

Permits Required

Two permits are mandatory for EBC Trek:

  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System): NPR 2,000 (~$15 USD)
  • Sagarmatha National Park Permit: NPR 3,000 (~$22 USD) for SAARC nationals, higher for others

Both permits can be arranged in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Pradarshani Marg, or in Lukla. We include all permit costs in our package price.

Fitness Requirements

You don't need to be an athlete, but you should be able to walk 5–7 hours per day for consecutive days with a light daypack (3–5 kg). We recommend starting a fitness program 3 months before your trek that includes:

  • 30–45 minutes of cardio (running, cycling, swimming) 4–5 times per week
  • Weekend hikes with a weighted backpack
  • Stair climbing to build leg strength
  • Yoga or stretching for flexibility and injury prevention

Packing List Essentials

Pack light — your porter will carry the main bag (max 15 kg), so your daypack should be 5–8 kg maximum.

  • Trekking boots (broken in before the trip — essential!)
  • Layering system: moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, waterproof outer shell
  • Down jacket (can be rented in Kathmandu)
  • Sleeping bag rated to -10°C (can be rented in Namche)
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended for descents)
  • Sun protection: sunglasses (UV400+), sunscreen SPF50+, lip balm
  • Water purification tablets or Steripen
  • First aid kit with altitude sickness medication (Diamox — consult your doctor)

Accommodation

You'll stay in teahouses (basic mountain guesthouses) along the trail. Rooms are simple twin-bed rooms, usually with shared bathrooms. Higher up the trail, facilities become more basic but the hospitality remains warm. Wi-Fi is available in most teahouses for a small fee, and charging your devices costs extra.

Total Cost

A complete EBC Trek typically costs between $1,200–$2,500 USD depending on group size, guide quality, and accommodation standard. This includes guide, porter, accommodation, meals, permits, and Lukla flights. International flights to Kathmandu, travel insurance, and personal expenses are additional.
